Devon Guild of Craftsmen

The Guild runs an educational charity which aims to promote crafts through giving young people access to design and practical making skills. The Big Hand Little Hand scheme funds artists and makers to work in residencies in schools in the fields of, for example: print, textiles, willow sculpture, pottery or environmental art. Funding is shared between the Devon Guild, the school and/or other partners such as local businesses.

blankcanvas-art.co.uk promotes arts and crafts and the artists. At the moment, we are selling hand-painted clothing, handmade bags , handmade jewellery, paintings, prints and masks made by 11 artists and we are rapidly expanding. Our aim is to give our customers as much information about the products and the artists and connect our customers to the products and to the artists. We also promote Teatro Ricerche, a theatre company that runs workshops and creates plays using improvisational threatre (commedia dell'arte), which includes also mask-making. Glass works courses. Suitable for both beginners and those with more experience. The evening class schedule includes a five-week course covering simple plaster mould making, glass cutting, glass fusing and slumping. Students will leave the course having produced their own glass object. We also offer regular weekend courses, 10-5pm both Saturday and Sunday. Courses run throughout the year.Also run jewellery, wood/stone carving and cold casting (procedures in polyester, resin and other materials, alongside finishing techniques) short courses.

Japanese Pottery Courses

Make raku tea bowls and fire them in a wood kiln - 2 day weekend courses. Studio situated within the beautiful Ashridge Forest, Hertfordshire. The courses are suitable for both beginners and for those with some experience. Each course is tailored to the needs of the students with a maximum class of 6 students so you are guaranteed a high level of attention. Beginners will be taught the basic skills of preparing clay and learning the authentic Japanese method of Raku tea ware making. The course runs from 10am-4.30pm Saturday and Sunday and includes home cooked lunch and refreshments.Students will be able to participate in a wood firing during the course. The tea bowls and other pots made in the weekend course will be dried, biscuit fired, glazed and fired on a subsequent weekend.

Stained Glass Courses at Lead and Light

Short courses and weekend workshops in traditional and contemporary glassmaking techniques including: sandblasting, leading, painting, copper foiling and fusing. Suitable for beginners and those with previous experience.Students will benefit from working with an experienced artist and within a small group affording a high level of individual attention. Beginners are delighted with their abilities and achievements in such a short time. Courses are practical and aim to teach the fundamental skills required to begin working in glass. Students can expect by the end of each course to have accomplished an item of work, be it a small panel, object or sample of decorative glass. With each new course or workshop offered, there is a further opportunity to explore another technique so you can build on your experience in your own time and develop your creativity and ideas at your own pace. For those with some knowledge of glass the courses offer an opportunity to develop specific techniques or to improve existing skills.

Spice (Student and Graduate Placements In Creative Enterprises)

The SPICE project has been set up to help students from the University of Manchester and UMIST and graduates from any university to gain work within Manchester's creative sector. This sector includes: arts administration; performing arts; music; community arts; film; graphic design; new media; and many other fields of work. Several organisations and businesses in the area are seeking to recruit students/ graduates to undertake projects and placements, or for part-time work. SPICE gives you access to a number or paid and non-paid opportunities over a range of different timescales (minimum of 35 hours over a six month period). These may involve: business administration; event organisation; fundraising; marketing & publicity; office management; research and development; IT development; web site design; etc.If you are recruited for one of these opportunities the SPICE team will guide you through an induction with your employer, and will remain in contact with you throughout your placement to provide support wherever needed.
