Exhibition featuring contemporary jewellery by the ‘Magpie’ group – Rebecca Barnes, Linsey Bell, Julie Cook, Madeline Furness, Craig Isaac, Claire Jeffs, Rheanna Lingham, Rebecca McEvoy, Mahta Rezvani and Julie Westbury.
Each jeweller creates highly individual pieces in a variety of media, inspired by primal instinct for collecting objects - as children we pick up feathers, stones, shiny sweet papers, things missed or forgotten, and present them proudly for some indefinable quality that speaks to us. We carry them around and make them ‘precious’, or hang them around our necks on the canvas of our bodies.
The ‘Magpie’ group work to encapsulate this child-like sense of preciousness in the ordinary and everyday, utilising any medium or material where this essence or quality may be found, creating
hybrid wearable objects or adornments that reference the jewel-like and resonate with domestic ritual and shared cultural meaning.
