Introduction to brass/bronze casting (over 2 saturdays)
Part 1 June 27th Moulds and Waxes 10am-4pm
Part 2 July 4th Metal Casting 10am-4pm
£70 for the 2 classes inc materials
Over two days of 6 hours each.
Day One : general introduction and a history of casting
How lost wax casting works
Basic safety and practise
Tools, equipment, suppliers and sources
Waxes, wax injection and wax carving : methods and tools
Moulds: vulcanized, rtv, sand and cuttlefish/soap
Investment : measuring, mixing and sprueing
During the day class members will produce a number of small waxes which they will cast the following day. Ring, pendant, badges etc about 1" by 1"
Day Two:
Follow-on from day one if time runs short to cover anything not reached
The Burnout Cycle: Kilns, controllers and methodology
Metalcasting: metal selection, properties, and melting (gas, electric or induction)
Casting : Sling, centrifugal, and vacume casting methods and equipment
Final half of the day will actually cast a number of small items prepared yesterday and fired during the morning.
Last 2 hours of day will look at fettleing & finishing. Cleaning, pickleing, polishing
